Tsunami Projects

An earthquake on December 26, 2004 with a magnitude of 9.3 ripped through the Indian Ocean causing one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in the last 40 years. The Tsunami is estimated to have taken the lives of more than 200,000 people, of which most were killed in the Indonesian province of Aceh. Survivors were left to face a new world of hunger and diseases, as the powerful Tsunami had destroyed their homes and businesses.

Grameen Trust embarked on a Post -Tsunami Support Plan with an intention of rehabilitating Tsunami-affected people. GT partnered with Yayasan Mitra Dhuafa Foundation (YAMIDA), Evangelical Social Action Forum (ESAF) and Community Action for Rural Development (CARD) in order to provide financial services to the impoverished people of Indonesia and India. An amount of US$ 50,000 was allocated to each of these three MFIs in 2005.
